Welcome from Vicky McDermott

Welcome to the March edition of the eBulletin.
Things have been very busy at the GOC with the renewal period currently open. This year, we have asked for some additional information to help us update our records relating to registrants’ education and equality and diversity information. This information will be used to help us better identify potential barriers for particular groups and evaluate our processes to determine fairness of outcomes in our decision making. If you haven’t already done so then please do fill out the additional online form, the link to the form can be found in recent emails we have sent you.
Everyone here at the GOC is a very excited about Love Your Lenses Week, the campaign which aims to improve good practice for those who wear contact lenses, follows on from a very successful debut last year. The week runs 24-30 March and you can find out how to get involved in the week in this issue.
In this issue we also give an update on the Educational Strategic Review, with our consultation on the concepts and principles now closed. We are looking forward to reading all your responses. Continued collaboration with stakeholders is vital to the success of the review and it’s been really encouraging to see so many individuals and groups respond to share their idea with us.
The start of 2018 has also seen us respond to the Government’s consultation on reforming healthcare regulation. With parts of The Opticians Act not having been updated for decades we have been calling for reform for some time. In our response to the consultation we made the case for us to have more flexibility to set our own rules and to make the fitness to practise process more efficient. This e-bulletin issues takes a closer look at our reply to the consultation.
Also in this edition we have an article from the DVLA regarding vision standards for driving and look at our new public consultation about our draft Standards for Optical Businesses. The edition also explores the Big Blind Walk, a charity walk which aims to raise the profile of eye health research.
