The General Optical Council (GOC) is warning registrants that time is running out to meet the minimum requirement of six CET points for 2013. Registrants who fail to record six points by 31 December may be unable to renew their GOC registration in the New Year.

Once registrants have taken part in a CET event they must accept their points in the MyGOC area of the GOC website to record them. Nearly 30 per cent of registrants still need to record CET points by the end of the year.

The annual requirement forms part of the new enhanced CET scheme launched in January this year, and was introduced to ensure CET is an ongoing process spread across the three-year cycle.

Linda Ford, GOC’s Head of Education and Standards, said: “We are very happy with the positive way registrants have engaged with enhanced CET this year, and I am pleased to report that the majority have already met their points requirement.

“However, almost 30 per cent have not recorded six points and the deadline is fast approaching. Registrants who have attended enough events to earn six points should ensure they have accepted them in MyGOC; registrants who still need to undertake more CET activity should do so as soon as possible.

“Registrants should remember that CET providers need time to upload points and that our offices will be shut between Christmas and New Year. I therefore strongly encourage anyone who has not yet recorded enough points to take action now to ensure they can renew their registration after Christmas.”

Registrants can log CET points or find events in their local area using the MyGOC section of

Most registrants need to obtain six CET points this year, although those who joined the register later in the year may have a lower pro-rated requirement. Anyone who is unsure about their points requirement is encouraged to log into their MyGOC account or contact the GOC’s education team.
