Students respond to registration deadline

Nearly 400 students have registered since the General Optical Council issued a warning at the end of November.

At 6 January, a total of 3,888 students were on the registers. The Council is now working with the individual universities and colleges to determine exactly how many students have failed to meet the deadline.

Registrar Peter Coe commented, ‘I’m very pleased with the outcome. Though we don’t have precise figures yet, it’s clear that we are now close to full student registration. I am very grateful to the educational establishments for their cooperation, and I am aware that this has added to their workload at a busy time. We will be looking at ways of learning from this year’s process to ensure things run more smoothly in 2006.’

The ‘implementation period’ for registration ended on 31 December 2005. The Council is now considering the position of students who remain unregistered. From January 2006, all UK applicants for full registration will be asked to show proof of student registration before admission to the practising registers.
