Student retention moves online

3 May 2011

Back to news listing

Optometry and dispensing optics students can now renew their General Optical Council (GOC) registration online for the first time. All students must renew by the 15 July deadline or risk being removed from the registers.

The GOC introduced online retention for fully qualified registrants in January this year. 95% chose to use the system to complete their retention, with a recent survey suggesting that the vast majority found it easy to use and completed their application in under 10 minutes.

The Council has sent all optometry and dispensing optics students instructions on how to complete retention for 2011-12.

Students on GOC-approved optometry or dispensing optics courses are legally required to be registered with the GOC. To renew their registration, students must complete an online application, and pay the £20 fee, by 15 July 2011.

The £10 late application penalty applies to those who apply after 15 July but before 31 August. Students who fail to renew by 31 August face removal from the student registers in September. Those removed who wish to continue their course will need to restore to the registers at a cost of £40.

GOC registrar and chief executive, Samantha Peters said: “We are encouraging students to renew well before 15 July as this will cost them less, and help avoid unnecessary delays.” She went on to say that “maintaining GOC registration is not something optics students should take lightly – it is a legal requirement. Students who allow their registration to lapse may find themselves excluded from exams and clinical training, putting their qualifications at risk.”

Any students who have not received their application instructions should contact the registration team on 020 7580 3898 (option 1) to update their contact details. Alternatively, email registration@optical.org. Students who renew their registration now but decide not to continue with their course in September should inform us in writing before 31 August to receive a refund of the £20 retention fee.
