Student retention countdown gets underway

10 May 2010

Back to news listing

The General Optical Council (GOC) has begun its annual countdown to the 15 July student retention deadline. Retention forms for 2010-11 have been sent to all optometry and dispensing optics students. Students who do not apply for retention by the 15 July deadline will face a £10 late application penalty.

Students who are currently on a GOC-approved course in optometry and dispensing optics are legally required to be registered with the GOC. To renew their registration, students must complete and return an application for student retention form, together with the £20 fee, by 15 July 2010 if they are to stay on the registers from 1 September 2010. The late application penalty applies to those who apply after 15 July but before 31 August. Students who fail to renew by 31 August face removal from the student registers. Those removed who wish to continue with their course will need to restore to the registers at a cost of £40.

GOC registrar and chief executive, Dian Taylor said: “Maintaining GOC registration is a legal requirement for students of optometry and dispensing optics. Students who do not renew their registration well before the start of the new academic year may find themselves excluded from exams and clinical training, putting their qualifications at risk. We are urging all students to renew their registration now to save themselves money, as well as any unnecessary complications further down the line.”

Any students who have not received their application form should contact the registration team on 020 7580 3898 (option 1) to update their contact details. Alternatively, email goc@optical.org. Students who renew their registration now but decide not to continue with their course in September will receive a full refund.
