GOC chairman Rosie Varley has been appointed as the new chairman of the General Social Care Council (GSCC).

On her appointment, Rosie Varley said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to lead the GSCC. Joining another regulator will give me the chance to put to good use my experience with the GOC over the past ten years.

“There has always been a pioneering spirit in optics, including in regulation. As a result, the Council has been able to make bold decisions and has often led the way in healthcare regulation.

“I will be very sorry to leave the GOC, but I am sure that it will go from strength to strength under the new chairman and Council.”

Ms Varley steps down as chair of the GOC on completion of two terms of office at the end of December, but will continue on Council until 31 March 2009 as a lay member. Recruitment of a new GOC chairman and 11 Council members is currently under way. The new chairman will take up office from 1 January 2009, and members from 1 April 2009.
