CEO report
Samantha Peters, Chief Executive and Registrar, presented her first activity report. In it she outlined the external activity she has been undertaking, together with updates from internal departments. Council members welcomed this approach.

Protocol on criminal investigations and prosecutions
Council received the revised protocol and approved it. In answer to a question about the scale of current activity, David Howell, Director of Regulatory Services commented that there are currently 81 allegations representing 50 defendants being investigated.

CHRE presentation
Baroness Jill Pitkeathley OBE, Chair of CHRE, and Ian Hamer OBE, CHRE Council member, addressed the meeting. They outlined:

  • their new responsibilities as the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care
  • changes in funding streams
  • potential new stakeholder groups
  • the political context within which we are all operating
  • performance review processes

Devolved administrations
The lay members representing the devolved administrations each presented oral reports on their activity.

Morag Alexander (Scotland) pointed to the differences in context for eye health care across the UK countries which are increasing. It was also mentioned that potential differences in context within England are becoming evident.

Fiona Peel (Wales) reported on the meetings of Optometry Wales at which she feeds back information from GOC Council meetings.

Brian Coulter (N Ireland) said that their devolved assembly is beginning to deal with issues such as health. He reported that a new GOS contract is being negotiated.

There was a general discussion about holding events around the four countries of the UK to ensure we gather a wide spread of registrants’ opinions and views.
