The General Optical Council (GOC) is hosting five consultation events around the UK to hear feedback from patients, the public, registrants, employers, other regulators and stakeholders on its revalidation proposals.

Revalidation for optometrists and dispensing opticians will be introduced in January 2013. The scheme will be fair, effective and proportionate, and the GOC is inviting those who will be affected by the scheme to help shape its development.

The events will be independently facilitated and will take place from 10:00 – 15:45 on the following dates:

• 8 February, Wales Millennium Centre, Bute Place, Cardiff, CF10 5AL
• 10 February, Britannia Hotel, Portland Street, Manchester, M1 3LA
• 16 February, Park Crescent Conference Centre, 229 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PN
• 18 February, Caledonian Hilton Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH1 2AB
• 19 February, Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, 73 University St, Belfast, BT7 1HL

GOC deputy registrar, Jon Levett said: “The introduction of revalidation changes the regulatory landscape in optics, and will affect registrants, employers and patients alike. It is essential that we listen to the views of those who have a stake in revalidation, and discuss the key issues surrounding the scheme. These interactive consultation events, and our consultation work in the future, will help to ensure we arrive at a scheme that is fit for purpose and fair to all.”

The morning session will explore and discuss the different levels of risk in optics and the afternoon session at whether employers’ appraisals can be used in revalidation. Delegates are welcome to attend either or both parts of the day.

The events are free to attend but space is limited, so delegates must register their interest in advance with the GOC. A buffet lunch will be provided. You can book a place at www.optical.org/en/news_publications/Events or by contacting Simon Grier on 020 7307 3478 or sgrier@optical.org

Notes to editors:

1. The Government’s White Paper on healthcare regulation, ‘Trust, Assurance and Safety’, directed that revalidation was necessary for all health professionals, and that ‘its intensity and frequency needs to be proportionate to the risks inherent in the work in which each practitioner is involved’.

2. The GOC’s draft proposals for a revalidation scheme have been compiled by the Council’s Revalidation Workstream. This group comprises both GOC staff and former Council members.
