GOC opens doors for election candidates

Candidates interested in standing for election as professional members of Council will be invited to a special ‘Open House’ day in June. Visitors will sit in on a Council meeting and meet staff and members to find out more about the Council and members’ role. Chairman Rosie Varley said she wanted to see a wide range of candidates come forward, to represent the richness and diversity of the optical workforce: “Membership is the most significant way to contribute to debates and decisions about the regulation of the professions. You don’t need any specific experience, as the Council provides induction and training for all new members. It is more important for professional members to have a good knowledge of clinical matters in optometry or dispensing optics, plus an interest in regulation and the issues surrounding safe practice.” Current elected members’ term of office ends on 31 December 2006. Nominations will open in August, and the election will be held in November.
