With just months to go until the deadline for the current CET cycle, the General Optical Council (GOC) is holding a series of CET surgery sessions for optometrists and dispensing opticians at next month’s Optrafair. The event takes place 4-6 April at the NEC, Birmingham.

The current CET cycle ends on 31 December 2009. To date, 48 per cent of registrants have already passed their general points requirement. Staff representatives from the GOC will be available over the course of the event to offer registrants advice and guidance about CET requirements.

CET manager, Jo Glover said: “All registrants need to get their CET sorted by December to stay on the GOC registers. As the clock is ticking, this is a valuable opportunity for practitioners to resolve any queries they have about their CET requirements, or to find out more about any aspect of the scheme.”

To coincide with the Council’s six-month open consultation on revalidation, the GOC is also hosting a question and answer session about the draft proposals. Registrants and partner organisations can meet with GOC representatives to discuss what the scheme might look like, and how it could be implemented. It is anticipated that revalidation for all practising optometrists and dispensing opticians will be introduced at the start of the 2012-15 CET cycle.

Advice for optometrists interested in training to become independent prescribers will also be available over the course of the event. Registrants can obtain up to date information about current courses, entry criteria and teaching methods.
