The General Optical Council (GOC) has today issued a final call to all registrants who have not yet earned their minimum CET points requirement to do so by the 31 December 2009 deadline.

With four weeks to go until the current CET cycle comes to a close, 86 per of optometrists and 82 per cent of dispensing opticians have already completed their minimum CET requirement. By contrast, 2,765 registrants do not currently have enough CET to maintain their GOC registration.

Dian Taylor, GOC chief executive and registrar said: “The latest figures are encouraging for the professions, and demonstrate a marked improvement when compared to the end of the first CET cycle in 2006. Many registrants have also exceeded the minimum points requirement, and it’s fantastic that the overwhelming majority of registrants have demonstrated such commitment to their professional responsibilities - and to their own life-long learning.

“However, it is vital that those registrants who still need to earn CET points make up ground now. There is still plenty of CET on offer, but time is quickly running out”, she warned.

In January 2010, the GOC will formally notify registrants who fail to earn sufficient CET by the 31 December deadline. They will be deemed to be in ‘shortfall’ and will not be able to renew their registration for 2010-11 until they have made up this shortfall.

Practitioners who have already met their CET requirements will receive confirmation of their points total, and can print out their CET record, when they log into www.cetoptics.com

Retention packs for 2010-11 will be sent out from 14 December. However, packs will only be sent to registrants who have already completed their CET requirements. Registrants who do not satisfied their CET requirements by 31 December will receive their retention pack in January, but will not be able to renew their registration until they have made up their CET shortfall.

Anyone who is unsure of the CET requirements should contact Vantage on 0870 749 4650 or visit www.cetoptics.com

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. From 1 July 2005, CET became a statutory requirement for continued GOC registration. The CET scheme exists to ensure registrants maintain the up to date knowledge and skills they need to practise safely throughout their career.

2. Registrants are required to complete 36 general points plus 18 specialist points where relevant over a three-year cycle. The requirement is calculated pro-rata for anyone joining the Registers part-way through a cycle.

3. The current cycle began 1 January 2007. The next cycle will run 1 January 2010 – 31 December 2012.

4. Registrants with a shortfall must fulfil their CET requirements by 15 March 2010. Anyone failing to do so will be removed from the registers from 1 April.

5. The number of registrants who have not currently fulfilled the CET requirements will include some practitioners who intend to withdraw from the Opticians Registers voluntarily, eg retirement, maternity leave.
