The General Optical Council (GOC) has today launched its first ever online Annual Report. The Report covers the Council’s work and achievements over the last 12 months, and is accessible from:

Updating the Annual Report to an electronic format is in response to feedback from readers. Last year, registrants and optical bodies encouraged the GOC to make savings by introducing more online publications.

GOC Chair, Geoff Harris said: “This has been a transformative year for the GOC, which is reflected in an updated, online Annual Report. Switching to a new format is part of a wider strategy of modernisation across the whole organisation. We are committed to being cost efficient, and innovative in all areas of our work. Our challenge is to achieve this whilst continuing to listen to the views of registrants, optical bodies, patients and the public. The launch of this year’s Report is testament to that commitment.”

Benefits of this year’s online Report include functionality that allows readers to customise and download sections and pages to suit their individual needs.

The GOC’s 2008-9 Annual Report focuses on the stories of those who have been involved in the Council’s work, including that of a fitness to practise complainant, and those involved in preparation for revalidation. A round up of the year’s CET activity is also included. This is the final year of the current three-year CET cycle, and all practitioners are required to have earned their minimum points requirement by 31 December 2009. According to the GOC, just over half of all practitioners have already achieved this.

The online Report meets internationally recognised standards for website accessibility (WC3) and is AA compliant. The Report is also available online in Welsh.
