The General Optical Council (GOC) has appointed Dian Taylor as its permanent chief executive and registrar. Members formally accepted the recommendation of the appointments panel at a meeting of Council held on 12 February.

Dian, who takes up the role with immediate effect, will oversee the reconstitution of Council as it moves from 28 to 12 members in April this year.

An experienced member of the GOC’s staff, Dian was appointed to the Council as deputy registrar in 1989. She then took on additional responsibility as director of education in 1994. Since July 2008, Dian has been the GOC’s acting chief executive and registrar.

Commenting on her appointment, Dian said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to lead the GOC. The Council has been going through significant transformation, and it is an honour to be leading the organisation as those reforms come to fruition. I am working with a fantastic team of staff and members, and am confident we are well placed to deal with the challenges ahead.”

GOC chairman, Geoff Harris, welcomed the decision: “Following a robust and competitive recruitment process, the panel unanimously expressed their confidence in Dian’s leadership, intellect and sound judgement. Dian also brings to the role 20 years’ experience in regulation and optics. This will be invaluable as the Council moves forward. I am sure members and staff will join me in offering to Dian their personal congratulations.”

Before joining the GOC, Dian was head of the Central Secretariat for the Royal College of General Practitioners.
