Council tackles Internet sales issue

The GOC is looking at ways to address the issues raised by Internet and mail order sales of glasses and contact lenses. The Council heard today that the working group on non face-to-face sales of optical appliances has considered opinion from Queen’s Counsel regarding the legal framework for these sales. Work is now underway to commission expert opinion as to the circumstances in which supervision of sales requires clinical judgement, and therefore face-to-face contact with a patient. A full discussion of the approach took place in private session to avoid the possibility of prejudicing the outcome of any legal proceedings.
