General Optical Council press release – 11 August 2006

Council appoints new Directors

The General Optical Council (GOC) is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Directors.

Caroline Withall is appointed in the role of Director of Legal and Fitness to Practise with effect from the beginning of July.

Jon Levett will join the Council as Director of Standards from 23 October.

The two new posts were created following the departure of Roderick Clarkson, Director of Legal Services, who has returned to private practice.

GOC registrar Peter Coe said: “The Council is delighted to have these two high-calibre individuals joining our senior management team. I am sure that they will bring valuable experience, commitment and enthusiasm to these important posts.”

Caroline Withall will manage all of the GOC’s Legal and Fitness to Practise work with the exception of the management of FTP Hearings. She is a qualified solicitor, and was previously Investigations Manager for the Council. Before joining the GOC, Ms Withall worked in private practice as a commercial litigator.

Currently Head of Education at the Architects Registration Board (ARB), Jon Levett has a strong track record in regulation. As a member of ARB’s executive management team, he advises the Board on matters such as standards in education and training, and continuing professional development. In his new role, Mr Levett will lead, in particular, on the development of regulatory advice to the optical professions, assisting the Council to establish and review guidance on conduct and performance.
