Calling all students! The deadline to apply to renew your GOC retention is 15 July. You can apply online in just a few minutes in the MyGOC area of

You must renew your GOC retention each year if you wish to continue training as an optometrist or dispensing optician.

Students who allow their registration to lapse may be removed from the registers and find themselves unable to sit exams.

Students with retention queries can either tweet them to @GOC_UK or telephone 020 7580 3898 and select option 1.

Guidance for students with disabilities

We have published new guidance for students, or potential students, with disabilities who wish to become an optometrist or dispensing optician.

It provides information on what students can expect during their application and studies, the role and responsibilities of their training institution and the role of the GOC.

You can download the guidance from the GOC website

We worked with our Stakeholder Reference Groups to ensure public and professional input into the guidance. We will be sending the guidance to all training institutions which run GOC-regulated courses, as well as disability charities.

New logos for training providers

We have designed a set of custom logos specifically for educational institutions to use on their recruitment material. There are two logos – one for printed publications; the other for website use.

We have contacted all the training providers, but if you haven’t seen the email and would like to use them, please email Liz Carr in the Communications team.
