Last week we announced that we will be cutting our retention fee for the second year in a row.

Optometrists, dispensing opticians and optical businesses will all pay £260 to register for 2012-13, while the fee for low income earners has also been cut, to £160. The fee for students will remain £20.

GOC launches improved registers search

It is now easier for the public to check their optician is registered following the launch of the improved registers search facility on our website.

You can now search for a local optician with a registered specialty - for example a contact lens optician, or an optometrist able to independently prescribe drugs for eye conditions.

Significant drop in student retention removals

This September we removed 217 students from our registers for failing to renew their registration for 2011-12.

The number represents a significant drop in the number of student optometrists and dispensing opticians failing to meet the 31 August late application deadline. At the same time last year, we removed 386 students from our registers.

Carrots Nightwalk

Team GOC raised a total of £1,952.50 for research into sight-threatening conditions on Fight for Sight’s 15 mile Carrots Nightwalk. Eight GOC staff and Council member James Russell completed the walk - a big thank you to everyone who sponsored the team.
