NHS Protect and the GOC tackle crime together

NHS Protect leads on work to identify and tackle crime across the health service. It aims to define and, where possible, quantify fraud losses.

We recently met with NHS Protect to discuss how best to share intelligence and information, to better protect NHS funds. Ultimately, this helps to ensure the proper use of valuable NHS resources in a safer, more secure environment.

Richard Rippin, NHS Protect's Head of Information and Intelligence, said, "We are updating the valuable Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed in 2002 between the optical bodies and the Department of Health on data sharing between NHS Protect and the GOC, working even more closely as the criminals adapt to a changing NHS landscape.".

Ivana Bartoletti, NHS Protect's Information Governance Lead, added, "Sharing information, within strict legal boundaries, is crucial to increase cooperation between our organisations."

Rosie Gavzey, NHS Protect's Specialist Fraud Adviser (Optical), explained, "The GOC plays a vital role, with its Codes of Conduct, in protecting the NHS by encouraging best practice, including the reporting of fraud. It is important for practitioners and patients to be confident that there are robust systems in place to protect NHS resources.”

Mandie Lavin, GOC Director of Regulation said, “It’s important that we work with other bodies to share information and spot trends. Working more closely with NHS Protect will help us both be more effective in our respective roles.”

Any suspicion of fraud should be immediately reported to the NHS Fraud and Corruption Reporting Line (FCRL) and can be done anonymously by phone on 0800 028 40 60 or online at www.reportnhsfraud.nhs.uk
