CET Review

As part of our overall review of optical education, we are reviewing our current Continuing Education and Training (CET) scheme to ensure it continues to support your needs and improves the safety and quality of care for patients.

The current CET scheme was introduced in 2013 but as the optical sector has been changing, so have the roles of optical professionals in order to support the changing needs of patients, the introduction of new technology and service delivery pressures.

In July 2018, we consulted on the concepts and principles that could underpin CET in the future. Generally, respondents had positive attitudes toward the current scheme but were in support of registrants having more control over their learning and development and peer review playing a more central role for dispensing opticians. The full consultation report can be found on our website.

We recently commissioned Enventure Research to carry out some research on our behalf to identify the current risks to patients and the public from the work carried out by optical professionals in daily clinical practice. Thank you to everyone that took part in the research, either by responding to the survey or taking part in the focus groups. The results will be published later this year.

The next steps for the review will be to present a paper to Council in November.
