Welcome to eBulletin

Welcome to the September edition of eBulletin and my first as GOC Chief Executive and Registrar. I am delighted to be joining at such an exciting time for eyecare and look forward to working with you all. While the summer period is usually characterised by frivolous news stories, it’s certainly not been silly season at the GOC! We’ve been hard at work and have a lot to update you on in this issue.

We are making good progress on our Education Strategic Review. The responses to our initial call for evidence have served as a good springboard for the next phase of the Review. We are now in the process of undertaking research and exploring a range of policy options.

In this issue of eBulletin we also look back at our first Love Your Lenses campaign week. It was a big success, with so many of you getting involved to promote good contact lens care. We're hoping next year's event will be even bigger - it's not too early to start planning how you and your business will get involved!

Back at the start of August we joined the other health regulators to agree a joint statement on handling conflicts of interest. The statement outlines the expectations of how the optical professionals should act in avoiding, declaring and managing actual or potential conflicts of interest. This issue takes a closer look at that statement.

Also in this edition, Esme’s Umbrella, the UK campaign group working towards a greater awareness of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS), share information and advice for optical professionals to help support patients with CBS and to raise awareness of the condition.

We are looking to appoint six new members to our statutory committees - four representatives from optical businesses to our Companies Committee and one optometrist and one dispensing optician to our Investigation Committee. The deadline for applications is Monday 18 September.

Finally you can find out more about our consultation on the Accreditation of Prior Learning policy and our live consultation on consensual disposal of fitness to practise cases, closing on 20 September 2017. We welcome all responses to both consultations and will consider the proposed change of policy in light of the responses we receive.

With best wishes,

Vicky McDermott

Chief Executive and Registrar
