Conflicts of interest statement

On 8 August 2017 we joined the other healthcare regulators to agree a joint statement on handling conflicts of interest. The statement outlines expectations of how optical professionals, and other professionals working in healthcare, should act in avoiding, declaring and managing actual or potential conflicts of interest. It is intended to support our standards, which should be the overriding consideration for GOC registrants.

The statement does not create any new expectations, but brings together and clarifies healthcare regulators’ expectations of healthcare professionals, including:

Putting the interests of people in their care before their own interests, or those of any colleague, business, organisation, close family member or friend

Maintaining appropriate personal and professional boundaries with the people they provide care to and with others

Refusing gifts, favours or hospitality which could be interpreted as an attempt to gain preferential treatment

As well as the GOC the joint statement has been signed by the following organisations: General Chiropractic Council, General Dental Council, General Medical Council, General Osteopathic Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, Health and Care Professions Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council and Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland.

The full statement can be found on our website here.
