Standards review: call for evidence

We have issued a call for evidence as part of our strategic review of the standards we set for optometrists and dispensing opticians.

Our review will seek to ensure that our standards continue to reflect good practice now and in the future, while enabling optical professionals to develop their roles – for example, by delivering more enhanced services in the community.

The call for evidence considers how optometrists and dispensing opticians’ scopes of practice may evolve in the future, and how our standards should therefore adapt to ensure continuing patient safety.

The consultation is open until 10 October 2014 and we invite all registrants to get involved.

As well as inviting written responses, we also want registrants to be able to discuss the key issues face-to-face with us and each other. Therefore, we are holding a public consultation event on 26 September 2014 at Friends House, Euston.

The consultation will invite debate from all stakeholders and we are particularly interested in your views on how our standards can adapt and continue to best serve all registrants and the public.

GOC Chief Executive and Registrar, Samantha Peters, said: “We really want stakeholders to attend this event and provide their views on how the changing health climate will impact upon the optical sector and practitioners.

“With an increasing and ageing population, growing pressures on the NHS and the development of new technology, it is crucial our standards allow our registrants to develop their practice while maintaining patient safety. To help us in this project, I ask all of our stakeholders to consider how the world of optics may change in the coming years and feed into our call for evidence.”

Attendance at the consultation event is free but, due to limited capacity, delegates must register their interest in advance by signing up via our website. We strongly recommend that if you are interested in attending, you register as soon as possible to reserve your place.

You can find out more about the consultation on our website.
