Standards project 110

GOC standards review

We have issued a call for evidence as part of our strategic review of the standards we set for optometrists and dispensing opticians.


Our review will seek to ensure that our standards continue to reflect good practice now and in the future, while enabling optical professionals to develop their roles – for example, by delivering more enhanced services in the community


The consultation is open until 10 October 2014 and we invite all registrants to get involved.

Council member vacancies

We are seeking to appoint a new registrant member and a lay member to our Council.


The successful candidates will start their terms of office on 1 January 2015 and will be paid £12,000 per year for a time commitment of approximately two to three days per month.


Optometrists and dispensing opticians are both eligible to apply for the vacancy of registrant member, replacing outgoing dispensing optician , James Russell. If you think you have the necessary expertise and desire to contribute to our work we would strongly encourage you to apply.

Students reminded to maintain registration

Following an increase in numbers of student optometrists and dispensing opticians failing to apply to renew their GOC registration by the August 31 deadline, we wish to remind all registrants of the dangers of not maintaining GOC registration.

A message from The Brain Tumour Charity

The following message comes from The Brain Tumour Charity:


Brain tumours kill more children in the UK than any other type of cancer.


Can you help us to change that?


At The Brain Tumour Charity, we know many children who owe their lives to an optician.


Isabelle is just one example. Her mother spent months consulting doctors about her daughter’s ill-health before an optical examination revealed a build-up of pressure behind the three-year-old’s eyes.

The Professional Standards Authority ( PSA ), who oversee our work, have recognised us as meeting all 24 of their Standards of Good Regulation during 2013/14.

News in brief

Selina Ullah reappointed to Council


We are pleased to announce that we have reappointed lay member Selina Ullah for a second term on our Council. Selina’s new term begins on 1 September 2014 and expires on 31 August 2019.


As well as being a Council member, Selina is also the Chair of our Standards Committee and a member of the Nominations Committee.

Four new appointments to committees


We have appointed four new members to our advisory committees – two to our Companies committee and one each to our Standards and Education committees. The new appointees bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their roles.


The new appointments are:

  • Richard Edwards, a registered optometrist and former Director of Boots Opticians, to our Companies Committee; 
  • Jonathon Lawson, CEO of Vision Express, to our Companies Committee;
  • Glenn Tomison, a registered dispensing optician and lecturer at the University of Manchester, to our Standards Committee; 
  • Professor Hilary Tompsett, a registered social worker and Emeritus Professor at Kingston University, to our Education Committee
