Welcome to eBulletin

Welcome to this edition of eBulletin. It has been an important past few months for the GOC, not least with the approval of new Standards of Practice for registrants.

In this edition, we have produced a guide to the new standards, a reminder on the CET deadline, information on our consultation on a code of practice for online contact lens supply, and messages from Vision2020 and the Department of Health.

A guide to our new Standards

In July, our Council approved the introduction of new Standards of Practice for registrants, to replace the current Code of Conduct. These will come in two separate documents, one for fully qualified optometrists and dispensing opticians, and the other specifically for student registrants.

The new Standards of Practice will come into effect on April 1 2016. We have prepared a guide to the new Standards to help you prepare for the changes.

Code of Practice consultation

We strongly welcome feedback from all registrants on this code, which is designed to improve the practice of online contact lens suppliers and encourage people who buy online to have regular aftercare appointments and eye examinations.

News in brief

Student roadshows

We would like to welcome all first-year students who have recently registered with us.

Over the course of September, and continuing in October, we took our annual student roadshow across the UK, speaking to new students to explain our work and what it means to be registered with us.

NOC exhibition

We will be exhibiting at the National Optical Conference (NOC) in Birmingham on 5 and 6 November.

We encourage all delegates attending this event to visit us at our stand, where we will be talking about our standards and the end of the CET cycle, as well as helping with any other queries you may have.

Fight for Sight

Fight for Sight are now inviting applications for Clinical Fellowships, Early Career Investigator Awards and Project Grants. The deadlines to apply for these are 2 November 2015.

Additionally, calls for the Fulbright Fight for Sight Research Award are also now open with a deadline of 6 November.
