Samantha Peters speech on Law Commissions' Bill

On 13 May GOC Chief Executive and Registrar Samantha Peters spoke to the Optical Confederation conference about the UK Law Commissions' Bill. This Bill is intended to replace the Opticians Act and the equivalent legislation of other regulators.

Samantha started by talking about what the Bill is and what led to its development, before talking about the ways in which it is important for the optical professions.

This includes:

  • how it will help the GOC to adapt to a diverging and expanding scope of practice;
  • how it will make sure legislation does not stand in the way of registrants delivering more community services;
  • how it will help the GOC to adopt a more forward-thinking approach to standards; and
  • how it will help the GOC to further improve its fitness to practise processes.
