Welcome to eBulletin

Dear registrant

Welcome to the March 2017 edition of eBulletin. It’s not too long since the start of the year, but we have plenty to update you on already.

When we consulted on our new Standards of Practice that came into force in 2016, many of you asked for guidance relating to the professional duty of candour. We have now published that guidance, and it will support you in applying the professional duty of candour in practice.

In this issue we can also update you on Love Your Lenses Week which we’re promoting from 25-31 March in collaboration with a wide range of industry stakeholders and patient groups. The week will aim to encourage patients to treat contact lenses with care and respect after GOC research showed that many wearers are not looking after their lenses properly.

Volumes two and three of our Registrant survey have now been published, meaning that you can read the full results of our research into how registrants view the GOC and the optical professions.

It’s also time for fully-qualified registrants to renew their annual GOC registration to remain legally registered to practise in the UK. You can apply online quickly and easily by logging on to MyGOC. Be sure to do this by 31 March if you wish to remain on the register.

Lastly, we take a closer look at our fitness to practise process. In our Registrant Survey 40 per cent of you told us that you didn’t know if this process was fair. In this issue you can read more about the purpose of our fitness to practise function and how it works.

With best wishes,

Samantha Peters
Chief Executive and Registrar
