Love Your Lenses

Our Love Your Lenses Week will encourage patients to look after their eyes after GOC research showed that many wearers are not looking after their contact lenses properly – such as by not having regular eye checks with their optician or by allowing their lenses to come into contact with water.

Registrant survey

After nearly 4,000 of you took part in our Registrant Survey, we have now published the remaining two volumes of our research that shows the state of the optical professions now.

Renewal

On 16 January 2017 we opened application for renewal of your annual GOC registration – and the vast majority of registrants have now applied. The deadline for prompt payment is today, Wednesday 15 March.

Fitness to Practise

In our recent Registrant Survey, while just 13 per cent of those of you who responded said you though our fitness to practise process was unfair, 40 per cent said you didn’t know. So it might reassure you to know that our most severe sanction, erasure from the register, is certainly not one that we issue lightly.

News in brief

Education Strategic Review consultation
 

The call for evidence on our Education Strategic Review is still live and will run until Thursday 16 March 2017. If you have not already done so, you can view the consultation and reply on our website.


New Committee appointments
 

We have appointed 14 new members to our statutory advisory committees. Louise Gow, Catherine Viner, Peter Black and Tony Harvey have been appointed to our Registration Committee. We have appointed Andrew Logan, Christine Dickinson, Mary Wright, Neil Retaillic and Kirsteen Newman to our Education Committee.

Joy Myint, Nigel Best, Marcus Weaver and Deirdre McAree have been appointed to our Standards Committee and Deirdre McAree has also been appointed to our Companies Committee.


Reappointment of Gareth Hadley
 

At the start of the year we announced the reappointment of Gareth Hadley as Chair. His second four year term will begin this month on 18 February and will run for the next four years until 17 February 2021.


Events reminder
 

We will be exhibiting at both Optometry Tomorrow (19-20 March) and Optrafair (1-3 April).

 

Down's Syndrome and Keratoconus

 

The Down's Syndrome Association have published the findings of new research they have done into Down's Syndrome and Keratoconus. You can read it on their website here.
