Online contact lens supply

We have now formed a stakeholder steering group to develop a code of practice for online contact lens suppliers and raise public awareness of how to buy and wear contact lenses safely, including the importance of following aftercare advice and having regular check-ups.

The stakeholder group is comprised of sixteen members from across the optical sector, including representatives from various professional bodies, an online contact lens supplier and several consumer representatives. It met for the first time in February and is chaired by GOC Council member Dr Rob Hogan, who said: “It was extremely pleasing to welcome a group with such a wide variety of experience and expertise and a shared commitment to highlighting the need for consumers to have regular eye examinations and follow aftercare advice regardless of whether they buy their contact lenses online or in-store.”

The stakeholder group’s work forms part of a proactive, multi-pronged approach to reducing public harm, which also includes acting on complaints about illegal practice in the optical sector in line with our prosecution protocol and strengthening collaboration with other bodies with a role in enforcement and promoting public health.

We intend to consult on a draft code of practice in summer 2015 and to find out more about this project, please visit our website at: https://www.optical.org/en/Registration/the-register/reviewing-our-approach-to-regulation.cfm
