Visit the GOC at Optrafair

Optrafair 2013 is just around the corner and is a great opportunity to meet GOC staff.

This comes at a particularly useful time for registrants given the recent changes to our Continuing Education and Training (CET) scheme.

Staff will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to your feedback about enhanced CET and the new MyCET system for logging points and finding CET in your local area.

The new scheme will ensure all registrants keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date and remain fit to practise. This means registrants will not just have to get 36 points in each three-year cycle, but will also have to meet other requirements to remain on the GOC registers.

The main changes include:

  • The number of points awarded will reflect the level of interaction required for each type of CET activity
  • Registrants will have to earn at least six points per year, as well as the total 36 in each three-year cycle
  • Registrants will have to complete CET in all competency units relevant to their registrant type.
  • Optometrists and contact lens opticians will be expected to participate in at least one peer review activity and provide a reflection statement linking the learning from the discussion to their own practice.

Linda Ford, GOC Head of Education and Standards, said: “The changes we’ve made to CET will be of real benefit to patients and registrants alike. There are a number of new requirements and a new IT system so if you have any feedback, or need to ask a question, come along to the GOC stand in the charities and associations section where our staff will be happy to help.”

The GOC will be on stand S50 at Optrafair from 13-15 April. In the meantime, more information about CET is available on our website.
