New Standards of Practice now in effect

All registrants are reminded that our new Standards of Practice have now come into effect.

The Standards, which were mailed to all registrants earlier this year, replaced the Code of Conduct that had previously applied to both fully qualified practitioners and students.

There are now new Standards of Practice for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, and separate new Standards for Optical Students, which reflect that students are still developing their skills and knowledge.

You can access the new Standards on our website.

As before, there are still 19 Standards that fully qualified registrants must meet. These are broadly the same, though there are some new Standards such as a duty to be open and candid when things go wrong.

The new Standards are designed to support registrants by providing greater detail about our expectations.

We will shortly be consulting on new guidance around consent and the duty of candour to provide extra help for registrants in these areas.

Please note that the Standards are not a rule book, and give room for you to use your professional judgement in deciding how to apply the Standards in any given situation.

If you have not done so already, we strongly encourage you to read the Standards and make sure you are fully familiar with them.
