Record number meet CET targets

A record number - 99 per cent - of fully qualified optometrists and dispensing opticians met all their CET targets for the 2013-15 cycle.

In total, only 160 people were removed from the registers for not meeting their requirements, the lowest number ever at the end of a CET cycle.

This accounts for less than one per cent of our fully qualified register, which reflects greatly to the dedication and professionalism of registrants in meeting their targets.

In addition, just 135 individual registrants and 44 business registrants were removed from our registers for failing to apply to renew their GOC registration by the 31 March deadline.

This does not include 322 individual practitioners and 23 business registrants, who withdrew from the registers voluntarily, for example due to retirement or moving abroad.

Both meeting CET targets and maintaining your registration are legal requirements, and it is very pleasing to see that registrants understand the significance and value in doing so.

There were a lot of changes made to the scheme before the last cycle began in 2013, which we are very happy to see were embraced so positively. In particular, it is great to see that so many registrants completed more than the minimum one peer review session. The 14,472 optometrists on the register completed 34,210 peer review events in total. And (non-contact lens) dispensing opticians completed 6,846 sessions even though peer review is not compulsory for them. These are very encouraging figures and are consistent with the positive feedback we have frequently heard from registrants that peer review has proved a very useful way of sharing knowledge and interacting with other professionals.

The new 2016-18 CET scheme is broadly the same, with some minor changes such as a requirement to complete CET on the new Standards of Practice, which you can find out more about in our CET guidance booklet.

We’d like to thank and congratulate all registrants for meeting the CET targets and maintaining their registration.
