CET evaluation report

In December 2016 we commissioned an independent agency, Collaborate Research, to collect feedback on the most recent three year cycle of the CET scheme (1 January 2013 – 31 December 2015), as well as some early feedback on the current cycle (2016 – 2018) so far.

Collaborate Research conducted two days of facilitated individual and focus group interviews with a total of 30 people, and a short survey in which 105 CET providers took part.

Feedback on the 2013-2015 cycle showed strong support for increased interactive CET, including peer review. Stakeholders judged interactive CET as an effective method of learning and felt that it contributed to increasing registrants’ engagement with CET.

Regarding the 2016-2018 cycle so far, respondents were largely supportive of the intention of the Personal Development Plan (PDP), but felt that it was not working well in practice yet, mainly because its benefits were not well understood by registrants.

Stakeholders made a number of recommendations to improve our CET scheme, including that we simplify the application process, giving further guidance to CET providers on submitting a successful application and providing them with a better understanding of the criteria used by approvers in assessing applications.

They also proposed that we consider moving more towards a system that fully encompasses Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

We will use the feedback from this review to inform a comprehensive evaluation of the CET scheme. We are also in the process of setting up a CET Reference Group to consider any short-term changes required prior to the start of the next CET cycle on 1 January 2019, and more long-term changes that will be considered in conjunction with findings from our Education Strategic Review. We will consult on any significant changes to the scheme.
