Welcome to eBulletin

Dear registrant,

Welcome to the February 2016 edition of eBulletin.

I would like to start by congratulating all registrants who met our CET requirements for the 2013-15 cycle. In total 98 per cent of registrants met their requirements. We have now entered the 2016-18 CET cycle, and have made some changes to help you get even more out of CET. This includes the requirement to complete one piece of CET on our new Standards of Practice, which come in to effect on 1 April 2016.

If you have not done so already, I encourage you to familiarise yourself with the new Standards ahead of their launch by reading them online at: https://www.optical.org/en/Standards/index.cfm

We are also nearing the deadline to renew your GOC registration for 2016/17. Applications for retention, including payment of the retention fee, must be made by 15 March 2016.

This is a legal requirement, and failure to apply will result in removal from our registers meaning you will be unable to practice until you have restored. I therefore strongly urge you to ensure you apply for retention via MyGOC as soon as possible. The application process takes just a few minutes and ensures you can continue your work from 1 April 2016.

Lastly, we have produced new guidance to assist you in raising concerns with us about any risks to patient safety you experience when at work or while undertaking training.

Concerns may relate to a fellow employee, or about your employer. For further information, please read our article on the guidance in this edition of eBulletin.

Kind regards,

Samantha Peters
GOC chief executive and registrar
