Welcome to the first eBulletin of 2016. 

In this edition, we remind all fully-qualified registrants of the upcoming deadline to renew your GOC registration for 2016/17, We also provide further guidance on the 2016-18 CET cycle following the publication of our new guidance booklet, and provide further information on a new policy for raising concerns to us about any risks to patient safety you may experience.

Apply for retention by 15 March 2016

All fully-qualified registrants are reminded that they must apply to renew their GOC registration for 2016/17 before 15 March 2016.


If you are yet to do so, we recommend that you log in to MyGOC to complete your retention application as soon as possible.

CET guidance booklet

All fully-qualified registrants will have recently received a copy of our 2016-18 Continuing Education and Training (CET) guidance booklet via email.

The booklet is designed to assist you with all aspects of CET, including changes for this cycle such as the addition of a new ‘Standards of Practice’ competency for optometrists and dispensing opticians.

Raising concerns with the GOC

We have now published new guidance for you and others in the optical sector on raising concerns with us about risks to patient safety, including where to go for advice and what protection is offered.

The guidance outlines the steps you should take if you believe that patient safety or care is being compromised by a colleagues or the organisation in which you work or study.

Interactive distance learning CET

We expect to be able to approve interactive distance learning for CET points again by the end of March. 


We have paused approvals of interactive distance learning while we consider what is an acceptable format to ensure that distance learning is truly interactive.

News in brief


We are currently consulting on new draft hearings and indicative sanctions guidance for our fitness to practice panel members. The guidance is designed to help panel members decide what sanction to apply, if any, in an FTP hearing to ensure fair and proportionate decisions.

Optometry Tomorrow and Optrafair


We will be exhibiting at both Optometry Tomorrow (13 - 14 March) and Optrafair (9 - 11 April). We invite all registrants to visit our stand where we will be providing support on our new Standards of Practice, CET and answering any other queries you may have.
