Flu vaccinations

Department of Health Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally C Davies has written to us to ask us to encourage optometrists and dispensing opticians to become vaccinated against influenza this winter. With this time of year often seeing a rise in instances of flu the Department of Health is leading a drive to ensure all healthcare professionals are vaccinated.

As part of its campaign the Department is stressing that flu can be fatal to frail and vulnerable patients. They go on to add that even an individual presenting no symptoms of flu can pass it on to other people.

More healthcare professionals than ever before were vaccinated last year: 63.2 per cent up from 50.6 per cent in 2015.

In her letter Dame Sally reminds professionals that vaccination helps prevent both staff and patients from contracting flu. She also notes that increased vaccination levels will help reduce pressure on the health service at the time of year when it is under most pressure.
