Following on from our initial Call for Evidence last year, we have now launched a consultation on the concepts and principles that could underpin optical education and training in the future as part of the next phase of our Education Strategic Review.

Our latest public perception survey has shown that the public are split on a possible future in which machines could replace optometrists in carrying out sight tests.

Fitness to practise acceptance criteria consultation

We are currently consulting on introducing formal fitness to practise acceptance criteria. The criteria would help us to identify whether to accept a complaint as an allegation of a registrant’s impaired fitness to practise..

Flu vaccinations

Department of Health Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally C Davies has written to us to ask us to encourage registrants to become vaccinated against influenza this winter. With this time of year often seeing a rise in instances of flu the Department of Health is leading a drive to ensure all healthcare professionals are vaccinated.

General Data Protection Regulation
 
As the nature of working as an optical professionals involves gathering and storing patients’ data, there is a legal requirement to be registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). With new GDPR regulations coming into effect from 25 May 2018 it’s vital to keep updated. Advice from the ICO and details about the regulations can be found here.
 
SeeAbility Guide
 
SeeAbility is calling on all optical professionals to help improve the situation for over 1.5 million people with disabilities in the UK by making their optometry practice more accessible.
