Video guide to new Standards of Practice

Our new Standards of Practice come in to effect on 1 April 2016.

To assist you with getting familiar with the new Standards, and ensuring you are confident in applying them, we have produced two video guides to help you understand the changes.

The first video is for fully qualified registrants, while the second specifically covers our new standards for students.

If you have not done so already, we urge you to read the new Standards and ensure you are aware of what will be expected of you. You can access the Standards at:

The new Standards will replace the existing Code of Conduct for Individual Registrants. They are designed to support registrants and raise standards by making much clearer our expectations as the regulator.

As before, there are still 19 standards, but we explain in more detail what complying with the standards will involve. Most standards from the Code of Conduct for individual registrants have remained and will be familiar to you, while others, such as a duty to be candid when things have gone wrong, are new and reflect the evolving healthcare environment.

Unlike before, we now have separate Standards for Optical Students that are different to the Standards for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. This reflects the fact that students are at a different stage of their career to fully qualified registrants, developing their skills and knowledge during the course of their education and training and seeing patients under supervision. The new Standards for Optical Students take this into account.

You will already have received a copy of the new Standards via email in early October.

You will also receive a copy of the booklet by post in December/January alongside your 2016/17 retention pack. As part of retention, you must declare that you have read the new Standards.
