CET cycle evaluation 2016-18

Following the end of the 2016 -18 CET cycle, we have been conducting an analysis of our CET data. Our aim is to develop insights about how practitioners pursue CET and explore ways in which we can help and support optometrists and dispensing opticians.

The current CET scheme aims to boost standards across the professions and ensure that registrants update their skills and knowledge throughout the duration of the cycle. The scheme encourages all registrants to pursue interactive forms of learning, engage with peers and reflect on good practice.
The data reveals the commitment both professions are making to pursuing CET. Figures from the 2016-18 CET cycle show that 81 per cent of registrants completed more than their minimum general points requirement.

Peer review has also been adopted enthusiastically, with 72 per cent of registrants completing more than the minimum requirement of one peer review session.  Despite peer review not being mandatory for dispensing opticians, the majority (83%) completed a peer review, and more than half (57%) completed more than one.

Reflective practice is also being embraced. Our figures show that registrants are choosing to go beyond the minimum requirements when it comes to reflecting on their practice and learning, as 80 per cent of registrants created additional learning goals and 60 per cent used reflection statements for activities other than peer review.

Our analysis shows that the CET scheme has helped to reduce professional isolation and allowed registrants to maintain their skills throughout the duration of the cycle.

We will use our evaluation insights to inform our current CET review to ensure our updated scheme takes into account all the key learnings from the last cycle.

The full CET cycle evaluation report will be published this autumn.
