Consultation: declarations guidance

Decs webWe are consulting on new guidance for applicants and registrants who need to make a declaration to us.

We're looking for feedback on the clarity, format and content of the new guidance.

It is our duty to be informed about matters relating to a registrant’s character, behaviour or judgement.

Registrants must declare all criminal convictions, cautions and disciplinary proceedings on their registration, retention and/ or restoration form. This includes minor misdemeanours, but not road traffic offences dealt with by way of a fixed penalty notice.

The revised guidance ensures that our existing policies and processes are in one accessible document. Following the completion of the consultation, the responses will be used to enhance or revise the guidance where necessary, and it is intended that the document will then be put before Council for approval.

We hope that the new guidance will help those wishing to join or remain on the register to understand more clearly what information they should provide, how we will process that information and make decisions using it.

The deadline for responses to this consultation is 16 September 2012. Please send responses to Philip Hallam at phallam@optical.org or:
