New Standards for Optical Businesses

Our new Standards for Optical Businesses have now been published and will come into force in October 2019. The Standards make clearer our expectations of business registrants and are reflective of changes in optical practice. They have been informed by recommendations from recent health inquiries, the impact of emerging technologies and the increased prevalence of multidisciplinary working.

The new Standards for Optical Businesses should be read alongside Standards of Practice for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. But they do not introduce a lot of new requirements and should reflect how optical businesses are operating anyway.

The Standards for Optical Businesses were developed following a public consultation, focus groups and interviews with members of the public, registrants and optical businesses. We also worked closely with stakeholders to address feedback received during the consultation process.

To help business registrants understand how to apply the Standards in practise we will be hosting a webinar in July 2019, further details will be provided closer to the time. And in October when the Standards come into force, we will publish a dedicated microsite which will provide additional information for business registrants.
