Standards Strategic Review

We are midway through a review of all our standards. This review is seeking to ensure that our standards continue to reflect good practice now and in the future, while evolving to meet the changing needs of the optical world.

As part of the review, we have so far developed new Standards of Practice for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and for Optical Students. These came into effect on 1 April 2016. To find out more about how we undertook the review of standards for individual registrants, please click here

When introducing the standards for individuals, we amended the Code of Conduct for Business Registrants to make clear that businesses must not hamper optometrists and dispensing opticians from meeting the standards expected of them. We are now developing new standards for optical businesses themselves, which will replace the existing Code of Conduct for Business Registrants and be consistent with, and complementary to, the standards for optometrists and dispensing opticians. We also intend them to be proportionate to the risks associated with optical businesses.

Our consultation on draft Standards for Business Registrants is now live and will close on 30 August 2018. You can view and respond to the consultation at https://consultation.optical.org/standards-and-cet/standards-for-optical-businesses/. We will analyse the feedback before our Council signs off the final version in November and the new Standards take effect from 1 April 2019. If you have any questions about the review, please get in touch.
