Guide to searching the registers

This section contains advice and guidance on how to search the online opticians registers.

We have tried to make the registers as easy to use as possible. They provide registration information for individuals and bodies corporate registered with us, which will allow you to check your optician’s registration status and details. The full register is available to view at our offices. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact our registration team on 020 7580 3898 (option 1), or email  registration@optical.org

What are the registers?

The GOC register is the statutory list of the individual practitioners who are qualified and fit to practise optometry or dispensing optics in the UK. Optometrists and dispensing opticians must, by law, be registered with us to practise. Students training as either optometrists or dispensing opticians must also register, as must optical businesses (bodies corporate) conducting business in optometry or dispensing optics in the UK.

You can use the opticians registers to search for an individual practitioner ( optometrist , dispensing optician or student) or a registered businesses ( body corporate ). All individuals and businesses registered with us are known as our registrants.

We set standards for training and professional competence, as well as standards of behaviour and conduct that every registrant must adhere to. Read more about our standards here.

If a person who is not registered with us carries out activities that only registrants are permitted to do (such as performing sight tests or providing spectacles to children aged under 16), we will take appropriate action. Find out more about the action we take about unregistered practitioners.

To search for a registered optometrist or dispensing optician, including students

  • Go to the home page
  • Select the green ‘search the registers’ button at the top of the page.
  • You will then be taken to the search page. From here you can enter one or more of the search fields. Below is a table describing what these search terms mean.
Search option Explanation
Register You can choose either to search the register for individuals, or bodies corporate.
First name/surname You can enter either the first name (or initial) or the surname of the individual you are searching for, or both names if you know them.
Sounds like If you are unsure of the spelling of a name, ticking this box will widen the search to include those who have similar sounding names.
Gender The automatic choice for this search is ‘either’; this will return results for both female and male registrants.
Postcode Entering a postcode here will return all individuals who have provided us with a practice address with that postcode. It will not provide a list of optical businesses in that postcode area. Only UK postcodes can be entered.
Distance You can increase the range of the postcode search here.
Registered as This section allows you to search for different kinds of registrants; for example optometrists, or student dispensing opticians. More information about these descriptions can be found here.
Specialty You can search here for those individuals who hold specialty registration with the GOC. More information about these specialties can be found by clicking on the link next to the search field.

Once you have entered your search choices, click the ‘go’ button.

To search for a registered business (body corporate) from the search page

  • Select ‘Bodies Corporate’
  • Into the relevant boxes, enter the company name or GOC number
  • Click the ‘go’ button.

What will my search results show?

The search results will display a maximum of 10 records per page. If there are more than 10 records that match your search criteria, the number of results pages is shown in top right and bottom of the screen.

Only a maximum of 200 results are returned for each search, and you may wish to refine your search if too many results are returned. To browse each results page click on the individual page number in the list, or click on the arrow.

Please note:

We are unable to give out registrants’ telephone numbers or personal contact details.
If you wish to contact an individual registrant or a registered practice by telephone, you should be able to find their practice telephone number in your local telephone directory, through directory enquiries, or in an online directory like Scoot or Yell.com.

We will only provide details of people who have kept their registration up to date. If a practitioner’s registration has lapsed, or if they have been permanently removed from the register, their details will not appear in your search results.

Searching for an individual practitioner

When you are searching the registers by surname only, where there is more than one registrant with the specified surname, entries are listed alphabetically by first name.
For example, if you are searching for an optometrist whose surname is Smith, the search results would display Alan Smith before Zoe Smith.

The following details are displayed for each registrant who fits your search criteria:

Search option Explanation
Name This is the name that the individual has provided us.
GOC number This is the unique number that we have allocated to the registrant.
Registration status Individuals on the GOC register and able to practise, undertake training or carry out business have a status of ‘registered’. A registration status of ‘registered with conditions’ or ‘suspended’ means that there is a current fitness to practise outcome in relation to the individual or body corporate (please see ‘fitness to practise notices’ below). Please see the FAQ page for more information.
Gender (individuals only) The automatic choice for this search is ‘either’; this will return results for both female and male registrants.
Registered as (individuals only) Individuals on the GOC register and able to practise, undertake training or carry out business have a status of ‘registered’. A registration status of ‘registered with conditions’ or ‘suspended’ means that there is a current fitness to practise outcome in relation to the individual or body corporate (please see ‘fitness to practise notices’ below). Please see the FAQ page for more information.
Date of most recent registration This is the date that the registrant was last added to the register. Previous periods of registration are not displayed, but you can contact us if you wish to check this.
Registered specialties (individuals only) Registrants can undertake further training to allow them to carry out certain specialist activities. To find out more information about GOC specialties, please visit the education section of our website.
Town Registrants are required to give us a contact address (which may also be a practice address). The town indicated in this address is shown here.
Qualifications (individuals only) The qualifications that a registrant has registered with us are listed here. For more information about these qualifications, please see the registration section of the website.
Distance You can increase the range of the postcode search here.
Fitness to practise notices Attached here is any current warning, conditions or suspensions in relation to the registrant. More information about the hearings process can be found on our hearings page.
Practice addresses This is a list of the practice addresses that the registrant has provided us. If there are no practice addresses listed this means that the registrant has not provided this information to the GOC.

If a registrant or body corporate does not appear in the result of your search, this does not necessarily mean they are not registered with us. You may wish to refine or amend your search, or alternatively you can contact our registration team who can confirm if someone is registered with us.
