This page provides information on how to restore to the student dispensing optician and student optometrist registers if you have previously been registered with the General Optical Council. 

If you have been previously registered with us and for any reason have left the register and you are still continuing your optical training you must restore to continue to train. If you continue to train as a dispensing optician or optometrist without being registered your examinations may not be counted towards your qualification and you may not be allowed to progress to the fully qualified register. 

If you have previously been registered as a student dispensing optician and now wish to train as a student optometrist (or vice versa) you will need to submit a full student registration application.

If you are already registered but are transferring to a different student register you need to complete our student transfer application

How to restore to the register

What do I have to do?

1. You must be enrolled with an educational establishment to continue your optical training. 

2. Complete and submit the electronic form at the bottom of this page. 

3. Once you have submitted your electronic form you need to identify an appropriate person to verify your identity and complete this form.

  Your application will not be processed until you have submitted your electronic form and your identification form, plu spayment. If you have other documents to submit (see form below) these must also be received before you can progress.

     What happens next?

  • Once we have received your electronic form and identification form, we will send an invoice from PayPal to the email address we have on file, for you to pay the restoration fee. You don’t need a PayPal account. Using this service helps us complete your registration faster. 
  • We will process your application within fifteen working days of receipt of both forms and payment. 
  • If you have not enrolled with your educational establishment before you submit your application it will be cancelled.  We will check your enrolment status directly with your educational establishment.   
  • If you do not pay your restoration fee within five days of receipt of the invoice we will cancel your application. 
  • If there are any mistakes in your application we may cancel it and request that you re-submit it correctly. 

What do I get on successful application?

  • You will receive an email confirming your restoration with the General Optical Council including your new GOC number. 
  • You can access your MyGOC account. This area of the website will allow you to update your details, download a receipt, update your supervisor details and complete annual retention. 
  • The registration year runs from 1 September to 31 August. Your annual retention fee will be due by 15 July each year. 
  • You will receive the GOC newsletters and e-bulletin. It is important that you keep an up to date email address with us as we send the majority of our important notifications by email, including about annual retention. 
     

Student Restoration Application Form

  1. If you are transferring from one student register to another, or applying to a new register please see the advice above. Do not complete this form.
  2. Only complete this form if you are restoring to the register that you used to be registered to. You must already be enrolled with an educational establishment for us to process your application.

  5. Your full name, gender, home town, and practice address (if provided) will appear on the public register and may be available to third parties.
  6. We need your full name, DOB, a physical address, contact email address and telephone number so that we can easily contact you about your registration.

  11. Your email address will also provide you with access to the MyGOC registrant portal area.
  12. Notifications relating to annual renewal are primarily sent by email.

  16. If you have further practice addresses to provide please email the registration team at registration@optical.org. All practice addresses must be provided.

  19. Please select from the drop down list the name of your educational establishment where you are enrolled to continue undertaking your optical training.

  22. Please select from the drop down list the name of your previous educational establishment, even if it has not changed. If you have not stopped training enter the present month and year.

  25. Registrants are removed from the register for many reasons such as; did not pay or apply for annual retention, left training, voluntary withdrawal and so on.
