Renewing your registration

1. Q. What is the fee for 2019/20?

A. £350

2. Q. Is there a late fee?

A. No. We have removed the late payment fee.

3. Q. Where do I apply to renew my registration?

A. Log into MyGOC on our website and use the ‘Apply for Renewal’ button (between 15 January and 15 March 2019).

4. Q. When do I need to complete renewal/pay?

A. By 15 March. Please don’t leave it until the last minute as if there are any issues we need to contact you about we may not be able to and you may risk being removed from the register

5. Q. What happens if I don’t apply for renewal?

A. If you do not complete your renewal application and pay the fee by Sunday 31 March 2019 you will be removed from the register. You will then be unable to practise in the UK or use a protected title such as optician, and if applicable you will also be removed from the NHS National Ophthalmic Performer’s List.

6. Q. Can I withdraw from the register?

A. You can withdraw by logging into your MyGOC account. In the retention/renewal menu select “withdraw/retire”. If you withdraw, your registration still continues until 31 March and you will stay on the register until that date. If you don’t apply to renew and pay the fee, we will remove you from the register on 1 April. Once you are removed you cannot keep the GOC number from your previous registration.

7. Q. Can I pay by Direct Debit?

A. Yes, but you needed to set up a Direct Debit before 1 February. Please see MyGOC for details on how to set one up for future years.

8. Q. Can I pay by credit or debit card?

A. Yes (apart from American Express), you will be asked to complete card details at the end of the online renewal process.

9. Q. Can I pay over the phone or by cheque?

A. No

10. Q. Can I pay in instalments?

A. No. The fee must be paid in one go. This is a requirement of the Opticians Act.

11. Q. Are there any reduced fee options?

A. Registrants with income less than £12,000 per annum can apply for a Low Income Fee. Please refer to guidance here.

12. Q. Can I have a receipt?

A. Yes. Once your payment has been processed, you can download a receipt from your MyGOC account. This will be available five days after paying. We don’t post receipts.

13. Q. What is your refund policy?

A. Please visit our refund page here.

Information about your education

14. Q. You are asking for details of my qualifications?

A. During the 2018/19 we asked registrants to voluntarily provide extra information about qualifications relevant to their registration. This is because we do not have digital records of all registrant qualifications. If you provided some information previously, you can check this and verify it should you choose to. If you have not provided extra information on your relevant qualifications, you can choose to add this.

15. Q. Can I choose to not give information about qualifications?

A. Registrants should inform us of their relevant qualifications that allows them entry to our register.

Not providing this information will not prevent you from renewing your registration. However, we may contact you separately for more information.

16. Q. My education provider or course isn’t listed?

A. If your Education establishment has changed name or isn’t listed please select the “other” box and give details.  If your course or qualification isn’t listed please select the “other” option and give details.

17. Q. I can't remember the information, will you verify it?

A. We may request verification of the information you have given us, including contacting your educational provider. We understand that you may not have this information to hand. We require the specific details of Education Establishment and qualification you received, you can give approximate dates.

Information about equality & diversity

18. Q. Why does the GOC collect Equality, Diversity and Inclusion data and what does the GOC do with it?

A. We are committed to treating everyone fairly and meeting our legal responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and related legislation (such as the Human Rights Act 1998). One of the ways we do this is by asking people to provide information about their ethnicity, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion and beliefs, carer responsibilities, pregnancy and maternity, marital status and age. We use the information our registrants give us to analyse and report on statistical trends in optical education and practice in the UK. With this data, we have a better base to assess impact, avoid unintended barriers for particular groups and advance the promotion of equality and diversity within our organisation and in relation to our public body remit. Providing this data is voluntary but it is important to help us to understand trends in the professions.

If you choose to provide us with this information, we will keep it confidential and hold it securely in line with data protection and other relevant legislation. We will anonymise any data we publish so you cannot be identified. The information will be used strictly in line with our Approach to EDI Monitoring Statement and in compliance with all applicable data legislation.

19. Q. What happens if I no longer want you to process or hold this information about me?

A. Please contact us via edi@optical.org

20. Q. Who will be able to see this data about me?

A. This information is strictly limited to employees who complete data analytics.

21. Q. I've got a question about this (EDI), who can I speak to?

A. Please contact our internal Compliance team via edi@optical.org or the main switchboard.
