Introduction to CET
It is essential that eye care practitioners maintain the up to date skills and knowledge needed to practise safely and effectively throughout their career. To ensure this, we oversee a mandatory CET scheme.
CET is a statutory requirement for all fully-qualified optometrists and dispensing opticians. The CET scheme is a points-based scheme that runs over a three-year cycle from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. All full registrants must earn a minimum number of CET points by the end of each cycle to stay on the registers.
Registrants can manage their CET portfolio, and maintain a record of their completed CET points in MyGOC.
You can read more about the CET scheme in our guidance booklet:

CET scheme research report 2017
In December 2016 we commissioned independent agency, Collaborate Research, to conduct some exploratory research to collect feedback on the most recent three year cycle of the CET scheme (1 January 2013 – 31 December 2015) , as well as some early feedback on the current cycle (2016 – 2018) so far.
The feedback gathered from this review will inform our comprehensive evaluation of the CET scheme which will consider any short-term changes required prior to the start of the next CET cycle on 1 January 2019, and more longterm changes that will be considered in conjunction with findings from our Education strategic Review.
We have now published the CET scheme research report, containing the main analysis of the findings from the research and specific recommendations.
