The new GOC Codes of Conduct for individual and business registrants come into effect on 1 April.
The Codes of Conduct define how a GOC-registered optician should behave in their personal and professional life. All patients have the right to expect that their optician adheres to the GOC Codes of Conduct. Opticians must also be able to meet our core competencies for knowledge and skills.
In our recent survey of patients and the public, the majority of respondents told us they wanted to know more about what to expect from their optician. To provide patients and the public with the information they need, we will be promoting the Codes of Conduct, and the importance of checking that your optician is registered, at events including the annual Citizens Advice Conference throughout 2010.
Copies of the Codes of Conduct are available in booklet form, and are also available to download from our website. Registrants and the public can request hard copies by contacting Simon Grier on 020 7307 3478 or sgrier@optical.org
If you have not yet had a chance to complete our patient and public survey yet, it’s not too late. You can tell us your thoughts online. To date, your survey responses have also helped to shape the development of our ‘GOC registration toolkit’ (see lead story), helped us to communicate our complaints procedure more effectively, and informed our content of the registers project.
