Check your optician is registered

Check your optician is registered Public-awareness

This Spring, the GOC is launching an information toolkit for patients and members of the public to raise awareness of the importance of checking that your optician is GOC registered.

The toolkit contains a patient information leaflet, ‘Check your optician is registered’. This explains the importance of checking that your optician is registered, and includes information on how to search the free online Opticians Registers. The leaflet also explains to patients what to expect when you see the GOC-registered logo in your opticians practice, and how the GOC can help if you want to make a complaint about a registered optician.

In addition, all UK opticians will receive support and guidance on ways they can actively promote their registration. The GOC-registered logo will be available for all opticians and registered optical businesses to use anywhere, for example on their website, practice appointment cards, letterheads, and other practice stationery.

We will distribute the patient information toolkit to a range of public information services, including Citizens Advice, NHS PCTs, Patient Advice and Liaison Services, Department of Health Local Information Networks (LINKS), and other patient information and support organisations (such as the Thomas Pocklington Trust, Witness), health charities (including Patient Concern, Help the Aged), and opticians’ practices.

We anticipate that the toolkit will be available by May 2010. For more information, or to request copies of the toolkit in advance, email cmarch@optical.org
